As Indians who have tried, tasted, and tested foods of various Indian regions and therefore cuisines, we can claim some street cred about (on our own yardstick) what is good... read more Indian food.
As I write this, I acknowledge a slight sense of haughtiness almost like "Anton Ego" (from Pixar's Ratatouille), and have churned through our share of hundreds (if not thousands) of restaurants in our lifetime so far. But very few make you get transported into that warm fuzzy feeling in your heart (kind of like what that ratatouille did to Anton).
Folks, Richie's is a hidden gem, and of all the places one would least expect such a place to be in Torquay. But, by heavens we thank our stars, we are so glad that we found it.
Not only was Riche on dinner plans the third night in succession, but this hat-trick was also broken (sort of) only because Richie's majestic chefs need rest too, and we're closed on the second night we were in Torquay.
Food-wise we tried their Sambar and Tamil Veg Curry, both were stupendously put together with a feast of vegetables that just made the whole thing give you that 'comfort' food feel that you often reminisce from olden days at home. The only minute thing that felt out of order was that the chapatis appeared to be the pre-packaged kind. But other than that, this is the food we would be benchmarking other Indian restaurants for a long time to come.
To further establish how special this was, a testament from my 7yo son sums it up brilliantly. Disclaimer: He is sick of the frequency with which he is exposed to Indian food both at home and at restaurants. However, on this occasion, after the first few bites he declared "This is how Indian food should be", speaks volumes about how good this food was.
Team Richie's ....Take a bow!
Thank you for being a big part of our memory of our visit to Torquay!
At the risk of plagiarising Anton Ego again
It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Richie's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in Torquay. I will be returning to Richie's soon, hungry for more.

Keep up the good work ☺️
May 27, 2022Unlike about 85% of the “so called Indian restaurants” in the U.K. Richie Indian is the genuine article.
Owned, run and staffed by people from the southern Indian state... read more of Tamil Nadu. Southern Indian food, which also includes the food of Kerala is totally different to the heavy, oily curries you will find in many U.K. restaurants run by Pakistanis and Bangladeshis.
It is lighter, richer and, in my opinion tastier than the rest. Based as it is on the use of coconut and fresh green chilies the overall result is very much to my taste.
I was fortunate enough to be able to eat Southern Indian food over a period of 23 years when I was working in the Sultanate-of-Oman.
The Richie Indian is a small restaurant in Torquay that has a dedicated following amongst the locals.
The moment we walked in I could smell the difference. I could smell the flavours of my past life.
We were greeted warmly and, even though there were just the two of us, offered a table for four. This gave us plenty of room to stretch out.
Jean ordered a tonic whilst I decided to try a ½ of the Malabar Blonde beer. This is made by the makers of Cobra and is in fact a blonde IPA. It was very tasty and so I ordered another ½.
Jean decided to stick with her “old faithful, Chicken Tikka Biriyani”.
However, I wanted a reminder of the food I had enjoyed on so many occasions when abroad.
So, I was greedy and ordered two main course dishes.
The dishes I ordered were, in my past, actually breakfast dishes but here they were being produced in the evening. No problem with that. I happily ordered the Idli and the Masala Dosa.
Idli are small, steamed, sponge like disks looking like miniature flying saucers. They are served with a bowl of vegetable sambar and a smaller bowl of fresh coconut chutney. For best effect one eats with one’s fingers. Breaking the Idli apart it is dipped in either the sambar or chutney and popped into one’s mouth. Heaven.
The Dosa is a large, thin pancake served wrapped around a large portion of the masala which is in fact a potato curry. Once again fingers are best for the consumption of the dosa. Breaking off a small piece of pancake one makes sure it is wrapped around the potato filling before being dipped in the sambar and/or chutney. Delicious. And, surprisingly filling.
Jeans biriyani was huge, very fragrant and full of small pieces of tender chicken. Jean loved it.
The other thing about this meal was the cost. Surprisingly reasonable.
Tonic = 2.00
Beer = 2.50 x 2
Biryani = 11.50
Idli (4) = 5.99
Masala dosa = 6.00
Total for a very tasty and filling meal. = 30.49
The service was good, waiting staff friendly and efficient.
Many thanks for a lovely birthday meal for me.
